Consultmed gives GPs a simple way to send digital referrals, request specialist Advice and Guidance, and reduce double handling, all from within Bp Premier. Over 1,000 connected Bp practices are already using the platform as part of a national network of more than 55,000 healthcare providers.
What is Consultmed?
Consultmed is an Australian digital health company providing a a comprehensive suite of referral tools, including eReferrals, Clinical Advice and Guidance, virtual triage, and consent management.
Through its integration with Bp Premier via Halo Connect, Consultmed allows GPs to send secure, trackable referrals directly from their clinical software. More than 1,000 Bp Premier practices are already connected to the platform, alongside a national network of over 55,000 healthcare providers.
GPs can refer patients to some of Australia’s leading health services at no cost, with patient demographics and key clinical information flowing directly from Bp Premier into the referral form. This reduces double handling, helps minimise errors, and ensure completed referrals are automatically saved back into the patient record.
Beyond Referrals: Building a National Advice-First System
Clinical Advice & Guidance is one of Consultmed’s most impactful capabilities. It provides a secure asynchronous way for GPs to seek specialist input without automatically triggering a formal outpatient referral.
Rather than sending a patient into a long wait for a clinic appointment, the GP can submit a structured request and receive advice from a specialist, often within one to three business days. The result is earlier access to specialist expertise, more care delivered in the community, and a more efficient use of a limited outpatient capacity
For health services, this approach can reduce unnecessary outpatient demand. For GPs, it provides timely support and greater confidence in managing more complex patients. For patients, it can mean faster answers and care delivered sooner, without waiting months for an appointment.
Spotlight: Mater Health’s Queensland eConsultant Service
The Queensland eConsultant Partnership Program, delivered through Mater Hospitals in Queensland, is one of the strongest examples of an advice first model in practice. Using Consultmed, GPs across Queensland, including those in rural and remote communities, can submit Requests for Advice to Mater specialists across endocrinology, cardiology, dermatology, respiratory medicine, neurology, renal medicine, and obstetrics.
The service is now supporting hundreds of requests each week, with a median specialist response time of just 1.7 days. Importantly, 82% of requests help avoid an unnecessary referral, allowing more patients to receive timely specialist input without joining an outpatient waitlist.
The operational impact has also been substantial. Referral processing times at Mater have fallen from up to 14 minutes per referral to around 2-3 minutes, and the eConsultant model has demonstrated a 61.5% efficiency gain compared to traditional outpatient pathways. For patients in regional Queensland, where outpatient waits may previously have extended to 365 days, receiving specialist advice within days represents a meaningful improvement in access and care.
