The Australian Government National Lung Cancer Screening Program, set to launch in July 2025, aims to improve health outcomes by detecting lung cancer early. The program targets high-risk individuals aged 50-70 who smoke or have a history of smoking, using low-dose CT scans.

The National Cancer Screening Register will provide program information and reminders to participants. The program’s governance structure includes two advisory committees focusing on delivery and best practices. Researchers estimate that the program will increase early-stage cancer diagnoses from 16% to 60% and decrease advanced-stage cancer diagnoses from 53% to 11%. By detecting lung cancer early, the program is expected to save hundreds of lives annually.

You can access more information here (About the National Lung Cancer Screening Program | Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care), but your Primary Health Network will play a crucial role in implementing the program and supporting primary care providers. Your PHN is your first contact if you have any questions, otherwise, Best Practice is currently working hard to integrate the NLCS into the Bp Premier NCSR Hub, and will keep you updated.
